If you’re chasing perfect blue skies and calm seas, the best time to visit the Maldives is between November and April, when the islands bask in dry, sunny weather outside the monsoon season.
For the most idyllic experience, March and April are ideal (avoiding the Easter holidays if you can, when rates climb sharply). Expect hot days, low humidity and peaceful resorts — perfect for beach days, snorkelling and sunset cocktails.
Because the Maldives sits close to the equator, temperatures stay warm all year — usually between 25°C and 31°C. What changes most is rainfall, humidity and sunshine hours. Here’s how the weather looks month by month.
Bright, sunny and blissfully warm — January is a dream month for a Maldives escape. Water visibility is crystal clear, so it’s excellent for diving and snorkelling. It’s peak season though, so plan early.
Average: 27°C Rain: 5 days Sea: 28°C
These are the driest, most reliable months with long sunshine hours and calm seas. Humidity is low and conditions underwater are spectacular.
Average: 28°C Rain: 5–7 days Sea: 28°C
Still mostly dry with plenty of sunshine, but a few showers can appear towards the end of the month. Sea temperatures rise, and visibility remains good for snorkellers and divers.
Average: 29°C Rain: 10 days Sea: 30°C
Expect warm weather and bursts of tropical rain — usually short-lived. Visibility in the water can drop slightly, but this is low season, meaning great deals on flights and hotels, plus quieter beaches.
Average: 28°C Rain: 13–15 days per month Sea: 30°C
Temperatures stay high with a mix of sunshine and rain showers. This is manta ray and whale shark season, as plankton blooms attract marine life — an unforgettable time for divers. Resorts are calmer and prices stay low.
Average: 27°C Rain: 14–16 days Sea: 28°C
Warm and sunny, though rain showers are still possible early in the month. Travel before Christmas for great deals; prices surge over the holidays.
Average: 27°C Rain: 13 days Sea: 29°C
Low season (May–Nov)
Shoulder season (Mar–Apr)
High season (Dec–Feb)
For the Best Prices
If value is your top priority, travel between May and November. You’ll see some rain, but resorts are quieter and deals are excellent.
Most travellers prefer November to April for guaranteed sunshine — just be prepared to pay higher rates, especially from December to March.
Surfers should visit March to October for the best swells.
Divers can enjoy clear water all year, with west-side reefs best from May–November and east-side reefs from December–April. The wet season brings thrilling sightings of manta rays and hammerheads.
As the Maldives is a Muslim country, note that during Ramadan some restaurants in Malé may close during the day, though resort islands continue normal operations.
Whenever you go, the Maldives offers something magical — whether it’s calm seas in January, manta encounters in October, or quiet luxury in June.
